After an unusually cold winter, we are delighted to see the buds
forming on the trees – in just a few short weeks, Vancouver Island
will again be awash in beautiful colour! The past few months have been
difficult for many golfers; especially so for our competitive juniors
who have persevered brilliantly through some very nasty conditions
to further their golfing objectives. Thankfully, at the time of
writing, Qualicum Beach is a balmy 13 degrees Celsius; a bit overcast
with just a slight breeze – in other words, a perfect day to spend
at the golf course. As we bid farewell to winter on the island,
even the most fair-weather of golfers will be dusting off their
clubs … the first tee beckons! Big Sky will not be far behind and
we look forward to an Easter weekend opening in Pemberton.
A couple of points to note for parents of junior golfers: The RCGA
has made several amendments to its quota system, used to determine
eligibility for CN Future Links Championships. The most notable
of these changes are the increase in exemptions available for the
Canadian Junior and a change in policy regarding international competitors.
Beginning this year, the number of players who will receive exemptions
will be increased from 6 players in total to 6 players per event,
to a total of 36 spots. There will also be 3 spots available for
international players at the discretion of the exemptions committee
(previously 1) and 10 spots available for foreign juniors (previously
0). These changes will allow more of our top juniors the opportunity
to compete in high profile championships great for the players
and for junior golf as a whole! For more information: www.future-links.org
Also
of note for parents of junior golfers in regular instruction programs,
be sure to review your eligibility for the new Childrens Fitness
Tax Credit; a non-refundable tax credit on amounts of up to $500
paid by parents to register a child in an eligible program of physical
activity. Click
here for more information.
Young,
seasoned or in-between, we hope you enjoy the spring edition of

shape as well as information on upcoming golf schools and seasonal

Try these exercises for a stronger golf swing this spring!

(Builds strength in whole center core)

Lying on your back, curl whole abs in, with knees toward your forehead
and fingers interlaced behind head. Keeping the abs ‘flat n firm’,
extend the legs out – lower the head a little, but still keeping
the shoulder blades off the floor, and extending the legs 45 degrees
off the floor and straight out. Repeat – curl everything in, then
out again. Slow and precise is best. If there is any sensation in
the lower back, press the belly down into the back and don’t extend
the legs quite so far.

When you're hitting your drive down the 18th fairway, do you feel
as energized and up to the challenge as you do on the first tee?
If not, you may wish to have a closer look at your eating habits.
The B vitamins - B1, B2, niacin, B6, folic acid, B12, biotin and
pantothenic acid are important in the metabolism of energy - they
aid the body in breaking down carbs into glucose, which gives us
energy. They are also important for proper neurological function
and the production of red blood cells, which deliver oxygen throughout
the body. B vitamins are often used therapeutically in the treatment
of stress, depression and cardiovascular disease as well as skin
conditions.
The B family of vitamins are water-soluble, which means that they
are not stored in fat cells to be used as the body demands (like
the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E & K). Therefore, we must regularly
replace them by eating foods which contain them! Good sources of
B vitamins include whole grains, legumes, leafy greens, citrus fruits,
eggs, meats and poultry.
If you are experiencing lagging energy or mental confusion on the
course, it may be your body telling you there is something missing.
Consult with your physician or health-care provider to keep swinging
in the best health possible.

Intention and Vigilance
The effort of achievers in pursuing their dreams can fittingly
be reduced to two primary tasks: 1) doing what you need to do and
2) evaluating how well you did what you set out to do. Doing what
you need to do is having INTENTION. Evaluating how well you did
what you set out to do is VIGILANCE.

Hope is a very good breakfast, but it makes for a terrible supper.
Many people wake up each day with hope in their hearts. It is a good to begin the day with aspirations. Aspiring to do something is a beginning. Unfortunately, many of those same people arrive at the end of the day with only hope in their heart. The great beginning to the day dissolved into little more than wishful thinking. We are advised to begin each day with hope and then DO SOMETHING that will move us in the direction that we aspire to go.

Stability Through Your Adductors
Here is the first tip of many more to come that may help you to switch on the inner core muscles that stabilize your lower back during rotational movements and re-train reflexes to prevent muscle strain!
Over the winter months, most of us become less motivated and therefore
physically un-conditioned. Without consciously being aware of it,
we have reduced the stimulus that our joints need to keep our brain
informed of ‘where we are in space’, or our body’s position at any
given moment. As a result, your reflexes to prevent any sudden
muscle stretch (a ‘pulled’ muscle) become slower and less
efficient. So, when we all rush out to the practice range and
then onto the first tee box in under 10 minutes in response to the
first ray of sunshine, there’s that all-familiar “stiff” feeling
as we grunt through our first ten shots! Sure, you may not be as
flexible as you were 5 years ago, but with the minimum of effort
you can begin to ‘re-awaken’ those reflexes, by contracting your
inner thigh muscles at address!

Balance and Stability

|

|
Many golfers suffer the effects of inconsistent contact with
the ball. Much of this poor contact can be traced back to
excessive movement in the lower body, which is typically referred
to as lateral movement or swaying. Many golf professionals
in the past have successfully told students to brace their
back knee, which is a great way to stabilize the lower body
and is easy for students to concentrate on while playing!
However, there are more body parts involved in the stabilization
than just the knee!
To take this advice a step farther, practice swings with
a ball placed between your thighs just above your knee. Do
this drill daily (50 times) for 7 days. Following this period,
complete the same drill while hitting short wedge shots. You
should also complement this drill with exercises at home or
the gym. Training your body to precisely control excess movement
neurologically is a more effective and permanent way to become
successful in eliminating the “sway”.

The Golf Shop is once again filling up with new and exciting
merchandise. Women’s clothing such as Sun Ice and Sun Mountain
outerwear have arrived and Izod, Mexx, and Daily will be arriving
over the next couple of weeks. The colors are vibrant and
pricing starts at $49.95. Footjoy has again changed some of
their shoe styles and I think you’ll agree they are much more
current. New men’s fashions from Izod and Nike will be a nice
addition to Antigua, which continues to improve their line
from year to year.
As for golf equipment we are excited to announce that we
now carry Nike! The Sumo driver has arrived and we can’t keep
the demos in the Golf Shop. Still the number one choice among
men and women in irons is Ping, with Cobra a close second.
For the golfer on a budget, Tour Edge has 10 and 11 piece
graphite sets ranging from $399.95 to $549.95. These sets
include irons, hybrids and woods.
At Pheasant Glen we pride ourselves on being able to fulfill any
request. If you don’t see it just ask for it - our staff will be
ready to assist in any way. Now that the weather is brightening
we look forward to seeing you on the course. Good Golfing!

Our warmest congratulations to BMGA instructor Brandon Guile
and wife Una, who welcomed their second son, Parker Stanley
Guile, on January 20, 8 lbs 6 oz, 52 cm. Felicitations also
to Charlie, 2 1/2, - we’re sure you will be the best big brother
ever!
A boy is a magical creature. You can lock him out of your
workshop, but you can't lock him out of your heart. You can
get him out of your study, but you can't get him out of your
mind. Might as well give up - he is your captor, your jailer,
your boss and your master a freckled-faced, pint-sized, cat-chasing
bundle of noise. But when you come home at night with only
the shattered pieces of your hopes and dreams, he can mend
them like new with two magic words: Hi, Dad! - Alan Marshall
