Reggie Leach once said,
"Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You have to set yourself on fire."
How fortunate we are to have the opportunity each day to work with
people of all ages who are striving to better themselves! From high
school students travelling from afar to train with us in preparation
for careers in Professional Golf to seniors who have golfed for
50+ years and are still honing their games... you inspire us each
day to continue learning and growing!
This summer at Crown Isle Golf Resort we enjoyed six different
sessions of 5-day Golf Camps, with students of all ages arriving
from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan,
France & China. Many of our younger students stayed with homestay
host families ... our most sincere thanks to Anita Coe, Leah and Lawrence
of Riversong
B&B and Brian & Pablita Biehl for their warm hospitality! Participants
staying on-site of course enjoyed the luxurious accommodations at
Crown Isle and our thanks go to Carla and her staff at the Front
Desk for all their wonderful assistance!
It was a tough decision to make, but, after 10 successful years
at Crown Isle Golf Resort, we moved in late August to our new home
at Glengarry Golf Links in Qualicum Beach. We're thrilled to have
had the opportunity to design our new teaching center specifically
for BMGA programs and are very much enjoying being a part of the
team at Glengarry! We are now all settled in and are offering a
full range of instruction options, including our 10-month Junior
Development program, 2-day golf schools, Daily/Weekly lessons, and
seasonal programs such as our Spring Break and Summer Camps.
Participants in our multi-day golf programs requiring accommodation
will now enjoy an authentic West-Coast experience with our new accommodation
partner, Tigh-Na-Mara
Resort, Spa & Conference Centre. Adults will have the opportunity
to enjoy a relaxing spa escape after a full day of golf, and participants
travelling with children will appreciate the family-friendly atmosphere
of this world-class resort!
We hope that you will enjoy our inaugural e-newsletter and that
we will have an opportunity to see you soon at our new location
at Glengarry Golf Links!
With best wishes,

Barrie McWha, Executive Professional, Glengarry Golf Links
The academy is now completely constructed and the grow-in process
is well under way. Our Course Maintenance Staff have fertilized
and top-dressed the two greens (8,000 sq ft and 15,000 sq ft). Sand
is being screened and prepared for the four large practice bunkers,
and the Academy marquee is in place and the interior is being set
up now.
Some of the small details around the Academy are being finished
up now as well, areas like the borders of the lake, the mounds,
and areas surrounding the marquee.
New Titleist NXT practice balls are in stock and ready to be used
for the short game practice, so that students won't be practicing
'feel' shots with range balls. Two Dryrange units have now been
installed, this will permit students to practice shots under
cover should the elements warrant it.

Diarmid "Scotty" McVicar, RPT, CWCE
The fall of 2003 has offered us a very unique opportunity at Oceanside.
With the arrival of The Brent Morrison Golf Academy we were invited
to assess the young golfers and develop fitness programs which would
complement the work being done on the golf course, in the classroom
through nutrition counseling, PowerYoga, and through the Personal
Excellence program.
Following the student assessments, programs have
been developed with an emphasis on four major areas:
- Warm Up & Stretching
- Cardiovascular
- Core strength
- General muscle strength based on individual needs
In the upcoming newsletters I will share some thoughts on each
topic. In this newsletter, I will to outline a simple WARM UP
& STRETCHING routine for golfers.
The main components of Warm Up & Stretching
are as follows:
1. Warm Up
2. Static stretching
3. Sport specific warm up and stretching
4. Dynamic stretching
Warm Up
This is like starting a car on a cold morning. It is important to
get the fluids moving through the vehicle. It is important to increase
the body's core temperature while also increasing the body's muscle
temperature. By warming the muscles this will make them looser and
more pliable.
This can be achieved by doing some low level activity:
walking up and down the practice tee at a good pace, walking around
the parking lot, or doing an exercise like jumping jacks or running
on the spot. This gets the pump (heart) going and the blood circulating
both to the core and to the muscles. This leads to an increase in
muscle temperature which will allow muscles to stretch more effectively.
Static Stretching
This a safe form of stretching. During this component all major
muscle groups should be stretched. The body is placed in a position
where a major muscle group is put on stretch. This position is maintained
for 10 seconds. Most people find that after 5 seconds they are able
to stretch farther for the last 5 seconds.
Static stretching helps the muscles lengthen, which
in turn gives greater range of motion. This leads not only to reduction
of injury but also enhanced performance.
Sport-Specific Warm-Up
With the heart pumping blood through the muscles, and the major
muscle groups having been stretched, it is now time to move into
a specific golf warm up. Starting with a high iron, and swinging
the iron to get the tempo, a golfer will slowly work through their
bag from short clubs to long clubs. From easy flip wedges to 5 woods
and drivers, hit in a smooth and relaxed manner, slowly getting
the tempo of the swing that will move from the warm up area or practice
tee to the first tee. This is not to be used as time to re-invent
the golf swing, but to slowly prepare the body to walk on the golf
course and perform to the best of your ability.
Dynamic Stretches
The complete warm up finishes with some dynamic stretches. The static
stretch holds the muscle on a stretch for 10 seconds. The dynamic
stretch, normally used by the highly trained athlete, involves a
soft bouncing motion at end range of an action such as the back
swing. This controlled soft bouncing takes the body part past the
normal range of motion.
Once this last stretching component has been done,
the golfer should be both physically and mentally ready to step
to the first tee. Remember, golf, like any sport, is best played
when the appropriate preparation has been done. Too often golfers
race to get to the course, grab a sandwich on their way to the first
tee, and start off double bogey, as they are neither mentally or
physically prepared to step on the golf course.
Get to the course in time to warm up and stretch
before you step onto the first tee. Your golf game will be much
more fun!

Maureen Noble-Kilback, R.D.
Sports Nutrition is a branch of nutrition specializing in helping
athletes perform to their optimum potential.
Your body, just like your car, needs the right kind
of fuel in the correct proportions, along with additional compounds
to make it run efficiently and with good power. Without the correct
mix of nutrition your body and brain will not function well - you
will tire easily, have reduced strength, be more susceptible to
injury and illness and have trouble concentrating. This is not a
good combination for having the winning edge.
What you eat prior to, during and after a round
of golf will affect results on an ongoing basis. Good nutrition
can help you achieve your goals whether you are a casual exerciser,
an elite athlete or somewhere in between.
A Registered Dietician (RD) can help you by determining
your caloric and fluid needs, making sure you are consuming the
correct amount of carbohydrate, protein and fat for your specific
sport needs, or just for good health and a better quality of life.
At present many people are following low carbohydrate
diets. Long-term use of these diets is potentially dangerous for
anyone, but particularly for those who are training for optimum
physical performance. Carbohydrates are the fuel of choice for muscle
and brain function. Performance will suffer without adequate carbohydrate.
A RD can create a nutrition template that is practical
and achievable for you and give you tips on meal planning, shopping
and preparing food.
Be sure you are talking to an expert - the title
Registered Dietician is protected by law and can only be used by
those who have met stringent national standards. A RD holds a Bachelor's
degree specializing in food and nutrition - be sure to ask about
designations, training and credentials.
Maureen Noble-Kilback, RD has recently joined the
team at the Brent Morrison Golf Academy. She specializes in sports
nutrition, health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, weight
management, and Women's issues. Maureen has a private practice in
Parksville, B.C.

Anne Sands, B.A.
I envision a world where everyone of us has a healthy relationship
with ourselves and where goodwill abounds.
To the degree our relationships work with ourselves, relationship
with others will work. To the degree we accept ourselves, we accept
others. Imagine a world where people feel accepted and wish goodwill
toward one another!
My context is the set of attitudes, opinions and beliefs through
which I experience life. In our junior golf sessions, "The
Power of You!", we are discussing our context or perceptions
and advocating the adoption of a context that will assist us in
creating the richest quality of experience of life.
A key position to take is one of ownership or accountability. This
position recognizes that something or someone outside of me is not
the source of what happens to me or my experience of it. Indeed,
I am the source.
This suggests then that we are always at choice as to how we are
experiencing life at any given moment. We may not be able to affect
what is happening outside of us, but it is empowering to claim ownership
of how we choose to experience it! I am the source of how I feel!

Quick Tip! Next
time your game is 'off' take the time to harmonize your mind and
body by allowing your mind to gently come to rest in the present
moment. With full awareness count slowly to 4 while inhaling and
4 while exhaling for 5 rhythmic breaths. By equalizing the inhale
and exhale one brings mind and body into equilibrium, settling the
minds agitation which results in more focus and balance. Use as
often as necessary!
Improve your game at Glengarry Golf Links with Yoga for Golf
... an Ashtanga Yoga based class adapted to specifically focus on
benefiting golfers. This class works on developing your overall
body strength, flexibility and core conditioning, giving you greater
distance and accuracy off the tee. You will gain an increased sense
of balance, giving you more effective club control and weight distribution.
By integrating breath awareness with focusing the mind you will
see noticeable improvements in the rhythm and tempo of your swing
along with greater concentration. You will also improve your overall
fitness level, thereby reducing risk of injury and accelerating
recovery time. No experience necessary! All classes Co-Ed.

Brent Morrison, Director, Brent Morrison Golf Academy at Glengarry Golf Links
Optimizing Technique in the Off-Season
While out on the course, players should ideally
be concentrating on how they are going to get the ball to the hole
and focusing on their target rather than swing mechanics. Realistically
though, most golfers don't have the luxury of putting in the time
required in order to improve their skill level to a point where
this can easily happen!

In our full-time junior program we are continuing to focus on technical
swing improvements and fitness strength & flexibility. We're also
becoming more focused on individual routines and personal goal setting.
I would like to thank all of you for putting forth your best effort
and persevering through these uncomfortable times! The swing changes
(for most of you) undoubtedly feel awkward now, but will gradually
become more natural.
As you are aware, our program has been designed to train you to compete at the highest personal level possible. Dr. James E. Loeher describes this process the best in his book The New Toughness Training for Sports (Penguin, 1995, ISBN: 0-525-93839-7). Loeher uses a computer analogy to describe your body as the hardware, your skills and talents as the software and emotions as the links that allow the software to operate. You have all brought with you a certain amount of talent; we are currently working on updating your software (skills). It is essential that we maintain the hardware (body) to ensure it will operate the software ... Scotty, Penny and Maureen will be assisting you with this through Fitness Training, Yoga & Nutrition Ed. Anne will be helping us link our hardware (healthy, fit bodies) and software (well-developed technique) through our Personal Excellence sessions!
Many golfers never get to the next level ... they don't fully understand
how to control their emotions in order to properly operate the software!
To control our emotions we must understand how to access the performer
in us (two great examples are actors and professional athletes).
How do you think great actors demonstrate such a wide range of emotions
on cue? Do you think Wayne Gretzky, Jack Nicklaus or Joe Montana
show up at the Hockey Rink, Golf Course or Football Field everyday
feeling energized and ready to perform? They do this by using mental
imagery, drawing on past experiences and cultivating a physical
posture that matches the inner state they wish to achieve. In the
coming months we will start utilizing some of these techniques,
learning how to access the performer!

by Adam J. Zabrodski, Grade 11
The past two and a half months have gone by so fast that it's hard to find
where all the time has gone. From the moment we got here, it seems
that we have been working exceptionally hard. Of course, this increased
workload has been made much easier with all the help we have been
receiving with our eating habits, physical conditioning programs,
and of course our self empowering psychology sessions. Life has
certainly been an adjustment from my home town of Calgary, so I
can only imagine the changes that the international students are
dealing with.
The weather here has been quite rainy in my opinion,
yet Brent has ignored my repeated pleas to relocate to Arizona.
After a recent trip back to Calgary with all the snow, I'm quite
confident that I will never complain about the weather ever again.
Despite the rain and the bitter cold, we students are adapting readily,
with a solid wardrobe of gloves, toques, and liberal amounts of
enthusiasm. All these are essentials although Brent has enough of
everything to share. The golf and going to the gym were very similar
to what I expected: lots of work which requires plenty of focus.
The biggest shock personally, was the introduction of weekly yoga
sessions. It is inherently obvious that those who think yoga is
a sissy activity have never tried it. Working out at the gym is
not nearly as tough as yoga is in my opinion. Not only have we learned
about our golf swings, but also how to eat and think right. Nutrition
and psychology are very useful, and much more entertaining than
I had imagined. It is very apparent that everyone in the academy
has vastly improved since the sunny days of September. It has been
the combined effort of all the work we do on the range, in the gym,
and the nutrition and psychology which has led us to this point.
I am anticipating playing in all the tournaments after Christmas
as well. Qualicum Beach is a unique place, and the high school has
been very welcoming to the golf academy, like allowing us to take
some time off to teach some children how to play golf. That has
had more of an effect than leaving home. Teaching gives you a better
understanding of your own golf game, and exponentially increases
the respect you have for your old elementary school teachers. I
will personally endorse any raise that is requested by any teacher.
These past few months have really been a great learning
experience, whether it is fitness, food or golf. It has given me
great insight into life in general and exposed me to all different
sorts of people that I would probably never meet outside of here.
It has been very rewarding receiving the benefits of all the hard
work I have put into my golf swing and into my fitness. It has only
been two months and there are still 8 to go, which lets me think
of how good I can get come the end of the school year! So far it
had been very enjoyable, and I look forward to continuing into the
New Year and beyond.
