Barrie McWha, Executive Professional, Glengarry Golf Links
The year 2003 was Glengarry Golf Links' best year ever on a number
of fronts.
The membership continues to be full with a waiting list. A number
of new members came on board during the winter months and we look
forward to helping them enjoy their best golf at Glengarry over
the years ahead. A healthy membership roster of active golfers ensures
that Glengarry has both a vibrant golfing atmosphere and is a welcome
place for newcomers to become active members. It also goes a long
way toward ensuring that the business remains strong financially,
and that is in everyone's long term best interest.
The Pheasant's Nest Restaurant had its best year
ever with sales reaching an all time high. Chef James Scott and
his team did a great job of serving a growing customer base in 2003
and we are all looking forward to 2004. Look for new menu items
this year as low carbohydrate food selections continue to be in
very high demand. Of course, James' secret fish and chips recipe
continues to be popular, as do breakfasts. Come to think of it,
can there be a better place to sit and enjoy a morning breakfast
overlooking the golf course and Mount Arrowsmith?
Head Professional Gord Melissa and his team in the
Golf Operations department enjoyed a record year of sales in the
Golf Shop. With the practice tee now available for club fitting
and the addition of the Ping Fitting System to compliment the Titleist
Fitting Cart, we are looking for great things in the year ahead.
Glengarry will definitely be the place to be fitted for the golf
clubs of your choice under the guidance of our expert staff of clubfitters.
It costs no more to be fitted, and the dividends for you and your
golf game are significant.
Renovations on the front nine were completed and
the response from golfers has been very positive, to say the least.
Over the past four months Golf Course Superintendent Jay Barner
and his team of dedicated Course Maintenance staff members have
been working on the small finishing touches on the new holes and
minor upgrades to the existing ones. This leaves only the new 17th
and 18th holes to finish construction, and the renovation of the
16th hole for the golf course reconstruction to be complete. Throughout
the spring and summer months there will be no disruption for golfers,
as the current 16th through 18th holes will remain in play.
The Golf Academy facility has been completed and
is now in use. Bookings for instruction continue to come in and
it certainly looks like a busy season ahead. Remember, here at Glengarry
Golf Links with the Brent Morrison Golf Academy, in addition to
our Director, Brent Morrison, there are four other instructors available
to help golfers improve and therefore get more enjoyment from this
great game!
All in all, 2003 was a breakthrough year here at
Glengarry Golf Links and we are all very excited about prospects
for the year 2004. We look forward to seeing you here enjoying this
great game of a lifetime!

Diarmid "Scotty" McVicar, RPT, CWCE, BMGA Program
Leader - Fitness
Development of the Core
It has been found over the last several years that
the powerhouse for many sporting activities is the core of the body.
The core involves the lower back muscles, both large and small,
and all of the abdominal muscles.
Golf uses those muscles even to a greater extent, as the "new"
golf swing involves a shoulder turn which is not initiated by hands
and arms, but now by the stable trunk as it turns the hands and
arms into a solid backswing position. It is therefore very important
for all golfers to learn control of "The Core Muscles".
It is also important to involve all the muscles
which surround the trunk, rather than only the large muscles. The
athlete has to train the muscles to become active without changing
the position of the spine. Many of the old exercises for this area
involved either the tilting forward or backward of the pelvis. Now,
whenever possible, the athlete is trained to keep the spine in a
neutral poistion while doing the exercises.
To achieve good, functional core control a series
of exercises must be done to address each of the muscle groups:
- Crunches on a ball will maintain the rectus abdominus.
- Russian Twists bring in the transverse abdominus and will also bring the obliques into play.
- Pull-downs work the abdominal group: rectus abdominus, transverse abdominus and the obliques. This exercise will also work the quadratus lumborum, the major back muscle which causes one to become erect from bending.
- The smaller muscles of the back, the multifidus, and erector spinae are brought into play in the Superman. The most advanced level is shown and should be worked up to.
- A combination of both spinal and abdominal function is demonstratedin the Rotational Push-Up. In this exercise, a push up is done as normal and then the athlete takes a weight and, under control, rotates up to one side.
If each muscle group is trained and strengthened the athlete should
now be ready to work those muscles in concert to provide the activity
required.
I have always described to my clients that a house is framed with
2" x 4" lumber. Houses which are in the framed stage can
be blown over. Once the outer and inner coat of wall board and gyproc
goes on, you have a stable structure. Similarly with our bodies,
the structure is the skeleton and the wall board and gyproc are
the muscles which are both inside and outside that skeleton.
If a golfer is going to initiate his/her turn by using the core
muscles these muscles must all work to the best of their ability
and must learn to function as a team. This is the basis of core
training.
For those who wish to learn more, there are excellent articles on
core stability on the internet and your local physiotherapist will
be pleased to introduce you to a series of exercises which will
meet your needs.

Maureen Noble-Kilback, R.D., BMGA Program Leader -Nutrition
Heart Healthy Nutrition
When one thinks of heart health and nutrition, thoughts
turn automatically to reducing fat consumption. There are, however,
other dietary changes you can make to reduce cholesterol. Following
is a list of some of the lesser-known dietary factors that may benefit
cardiovascular health.
1. Plant Sterols. These are organic lipid compounds
found naturally in plant foods. They act by reducing the absorption
of cholesterol in the intestine. Increased consumption of plant
sterols may reduce total and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood
stream. Plant sterols can be found in vegetable oils, nuts, and
seeds, legumes & some margarine.
2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids. O-3 FA's are particularly relevant to people
at risk of or with coronary heart disease (CHD). They help to decrease
serum triglycerides and platelet aggregation, thereby increasing
cardiac stability. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish such
as tuna, sardines & salmon, as well as green leafy vegetables,
nuts, tofu and flax seed.
3. Soluble Fibre. S.F. is effective in lowering total and LDL cholesterol
levels. Increased intake of S.F. is associated with a significant
decrease in the risk of CHD and mortality. Sources of S.F. include
oatmeal, oat bran, psyllium, legumes, barley and fruit.
4. B Vitamins. Research has shown that folate, Vitamins B6 &
B12 regulate homocysteine levels. Increased homocysteine levels
have been associated with increased risk of premature cardiovascular
disease (CVD). These B vitamins are found in green leafy vegetables,
legumes, and fortified breads/ cereals.
5. Vitamin E. This vitamin acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells
from damage and thus reducing risk of CVD. Foods rich in vitamin
E seem to have a more positive effect than supplements. Good sources
are nuts, seeds and wheat germ.
6. Phytochemicals. These are plant based substances that also act
as antioxidants. Examples are carotenoids, which are found in tomatoes
and red & orange vegetables, flavonoids in green and black tea,
dark green vegetables and red wine and isofavones found in soy products.
As can be seen, consuming a diet higher in plant
based foods is extremely beneficial in preventing heart disease.
Following is a heart healthy, delicious hearty soup high in carotenoids.
Serve with 12-grain bread, hummus and a salad for a nutritious meal,
rounded out with a glass full bodied red wine. Enjoy fresh fruit
and low fat frozen yogurt for dessert.
Curried Squash Soup with Cilantro
Preparation: 20 minutes Cooking: 25 minutes Serves 6
1 med onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 carrots, peeled & chopped
4 cups (1L) acorn squash, peeled, seeded, chopped

1 tsp (5 ml) ground cumin
4 cups (1L) water
4 packets OXO 35% Less Salt Chicken Bouillon
3 tbsp (50 ml) chopped fresh cilantro
¼ tsp (1 ml) hot sauce

onion, garlic, carrot & squash in becel margarine for about
5 minutes. Stir in curry and cumin and cook for an additional minute.

Michael Anthony
How
Good Do You Want To Be?
If you asked Tiger Woods that question, he would
just smile at you. If you asked him that question while he was in
his youth, he probably would have told you "I want to be the
best golfer to ever play the game".
So how did Tiger get to where he is and how do you
get to where you want to be? Tiger got there by have an overwhelming
desire to be the best he could be, exceptional God given talent
and the mental discipline to do whatever it takes to accomplish
his goals. Plus, he believes in himself and he is doing the right
things.
Let's forget about Tiger and talk about you. Whether
you are trying to break a 100, a professional on tour or some where
in between, the same principles apply to you. The first question
is how good do you want to be? The next question is how strong is
your desire?
Then, you have to ask yourself, how much natural
talent do you have? How much time/financial resources do you have
or are willing to commit to achieving your goals or dreams? How
much mental discipline do you have? The final question is do believe
in yourself?
Whew! Now that is behind us where do we go from
here. First off, I want you to know that I want to help you and
can if you follow the mental training program detailed in my book
'The Mental Keys To Improve Your Golf' and my mental tips. I know
it works from the positive results many golfers have had as well
as the athletes who used my program to win Gold and Silver Medals
in the Olympics.
All you have to do is have a goal you desire to
achieve, follow the program, persevere, stay positive, learn from
your mistakes and believe you will get there regardless of the obstacles
you face. If you have a process that works, it's just a matter of
time until you get there. You can speed up the process, but you
can not eliminate the time it takes for your belief to become a
reality. Just make sure that you don't become discouraged and quite
before you get there.
Many of my tips focus on helping you to overcome
your negative emotions that are holding you back. Hopefully, this
tip will inspire you to take a second look at what you are trying
to accomplish and help you realize that your dreams will come true
if you work hard and smart and never give up.
Success begins with your state of mind. You have
to believe in yourself before you can ever win a prize or reach
your goals. So how good do you want to be? Are you willing to pay
the price of success?
Michael
Anthony is a professional speaker and mental trainer to Olympic Medalists.
He is the author of The
Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf.

Penny McGuire, BMGA Program Leader - PowerYoga
Stop Light Stretches
You can do these in the car to relieve neck/shoulder
tension and headaches and improve focus. Sitting as straight as
possible, press the back of your head into the head bolster. Hold
for one full breath and on the second exhale gently release. Use
your neck muscles only - not your shoulders/chest and abdominals.
Slowly move your right ear towards your right shoulder as you move
your right shoulder down towards your right hip, while still looking
straight ahead out the windscreen. Hold for one full inhale, exhale,
inhale and release on the second exhale and repeat on the other
side. Do as often as necessary at every stop light!
Something to remember when you play your next game
It's all about confidence. Have you ever noticed how on the days
you're feeling on top of the world you have a great game? Next time,
before you go out to play, do a 'confidence check'. Ask yourself:
"How am I feeling right now?" and "Do I want to take
this attitude onto the course?" Just the recognition and the
intention to change your mood is enough to begin a great game!

Brandon Guile, Teaching Professional, Brent Morrison Golf Academy
at Glengarry Golf Links
Develop Your Game More Effectively with Quality
Practice
Another winter season is nearing an end with spring
just around the corner and the practice facility is filling up with
golfers looking to shed the wintertime rust! Watching golfers hitting
balls today made me realize that many golfers are practicing incorrectly.
No doubt you've heard this one before: "Practice does not make
perfect; perfect practice makes perfect". Golf is unique in
that most golfers have to warm up at a practice area and then play
on a course, whereas athletes in other sports have the advantage
of practicing on their field of play. Every shot you hit on the
golf course is unique with its own challenges and requires high
levels of thought and concentration. To maximize your practice time,
it's imperative to minimize distractions and have a practice plan!
Here are some keys to developing a quality practice
routine:
- Practice like you are playing on the golf course.
Simulate game-like conditions. Play shots, just don't just beat
balls.
- Hit every shot with focus and intention. Pick
a target and visualize the ball flight, seeing your ball fly through
the air, land on the green, and roll towards the hole. Remember,
your brain can't differentiate between what you imagine vividly
and what actually is real.
- When practicing, imagine some of the holes on
the course. Play the round on the practice tee! Start with the
tee shot, then execute your approach. Play the first 3 or 4 holes
this way so you get a feel for the clubs you potentially will
be using during the upcoming round.
- If you are playing that day and have an hour
or so to wait, practice your putting first, then your long game.
Too many people hit shots first then move to the putting green
20 minutes or so before their tee time. By the time they get to
the first tee their body has cooled down
and their swing
may have as well!
- Allocate a sufficient
amount of your practice to short game. 63% of your shots on the
golf course are from 100 yards and in!
- Practice developing your weak areas, not your
strengths. How do you know your strengths and weaknesses? By accurately
recording and evaluating your rounds. Keep track on your scorecard
of statistics such as GIR (Greens hit in Regulation), Total Putts
per round, Fairways hit from the tee (X/14), up and down from
the sand or sand saves (SS), Course and weather conditions.
- If you are making swing changes, pick one change
to work on at a time. Stick to one drill or swing thought. A clear
and free mind works better than one full of competing thoughts.
- Use drills to enhance your practice. Make up
games. Compete against your friends on the practice tee. Have
a KP, or have your friend call a shot style in the middle of your
back swing and try to execute it, i.e. high draw, low fade, etc.
- Use good practice balls if you can, especially
for your short game and for putting.
- Utilize training aids that assist you in developing
muscle memory on a proper swing plane
Remember, if you just want some exercise, beat balls.
If you want results, engage in quality practice.
Investing in a good coach is always a smart idea
for anyone who wants to take his or her game to the next level.
There is no single better way to develop your game than to have
a professional assess and evaluate your technique, then work with
you to develop a plan for improvement. Maximize your practice and
minimize your mistakes! Brent Morrison Golf Academy at Glengarry
provides a Coaching program for golfers who are serious about making
game improvements. One lesson will always help to provide some key
insights, however an ongoing coaching program tailored to your needs
can really pay off. Contact the Brent Morrison Golf Academy to register
for a Coaching program or have a custom program designed to fit
your specific needs.

Brent Morrison, Director, Brent Morrison Golf Academy at Glengarry
Golf Links
As our high school students begin their second semester at school, we will also be making changes to training routines to address the pre-competitive phase of our program.
Students are beginning to map out their tournament schedules and should optimally have their schedules set by the end of this month. Planning is done online by the student in the tournament section of his or her golf profile on elessons4sports.com. Tournament results and player stats are also recorded in this fashion, providing valuable data for coaches and students alike.
The technical phase of our program involves making swing changes and addressing specific concepts in a small group lesson format. In our pre-competitive phase, students are now working independently on individualized routines, developed to maximize each student's daily training time. Our goal is to help our players reach their peak competitive performance state based on their individual tournament schedules, taking technical, physical, mental and nutritional components into consideration. Plans to balance work and rest are established based on each player's individual schedule. As we enter into this phase, we look at variety in the students' routines to avoid boredom, burnout and injuries.
We are focusing more closely on topics in sports psychology, optimizing how we will mentally approach the upcoming competitive season. We will be continuing to develop our mental skills in our sessions with Doug Swanson, M.Sc., February 17 & 18, 7:00-9:00 pm in the Pheasant's Nest.

Tiffnee Wiens, Prince Rupert, B.C
Hi, my name is Tiffnee Wiens and I am from Prince
Rupert, British Columbia. I made the decision to attend the Brent
Morrison Golf Academy to take my game to the next level. I have
plans to attend a college or university in the United States on
a golf scholarship and I needed a stronger foundation and a better
understanding of my swing. My goal is to take my game to the highest
competitive level that I can achieve. I would also like to become
a Teaching Professional.
I arrived in Qualicum Beach in August and Janie had set me up with
a homestay when I came for an interview earlier in the year. I found
that I was not comfortable at this house and when I said something
to Janie she immediately moved me and I was placed in the home I
am at now. I have been treated with the utmost respect by everyone
and been made to feel at home both at the homestay and at Glengarry.
The past five months have flown by, as I am busy every day. The
program here has given me a well-rounded approach to golf. With
Scotty at the Oceanside Physiotherapy Center I am working hard on
developing the muscles that enable me to have the best swing I can
produce. The PowerYoga with Penny McGuire has given me more flexibility
and peace of mind. Working with Maureen Noble-Kilback, I have gained
a better understanding of the foods that will help me and when to
eat them. The Personal Excellence with Anne Sands has allowed me
to focus, keep my perspective, forget the bad shot and not repeat.
Brent Morrison has taken my game to the next level. I now know when
I am hitting thin or fat, what is causing this to happen and how
to correct it, as I understand my golf swing. My putting stroke
was evaluated, and a heel-toe weighted putter was recommended. I
have since changed my existing face-balanced putter and my putting
has improved. Once my swing had changed I was fitted again for clubs
and I have changed irons. At the moment my driver and woods are
fine. My ball flight is higher with greater distance and increased
accuracy.
What I really enjoy about Brent Morrison Golf Academy at Glengarry
is the freedom that you have for practicing. With the new practice
facility there is a private teaching area for academy students at
the back, large putting greens and varied sand traps and pitching
greens I have the perfect place to practice the many shots I would
encounter on the course.
Since September I have been working hard on my game and am looking
forward to playing tournaments this spring. The best part is that
I still have time to fine-tune my game!
Everyone at the Brent Morrison Golf Academy at Glengarry Golf Links
has been a part of my improvement and they have a great staff. Thank
you!
