Question:
I want to buy a Mizuno MP 56 degree Sandwedge. There is an 8 degree bounce and a 14 degree bounce available. I think that the 8 degree is more versatile than the 14 degree one. Can you advise on which one to buy?
Answer:
There are three important questions you need to ask yourself:
- What is the main reason you are you purchasing the club: sand, finesse shots around the green or full shots and approaches from the fairway?
- What are the typical ground conditions you play in?
- When you swing, do you have a steep or shallow angle into the ball? (You can tell this by your divots)
If you are looking for a wedge to use out of the sand and the typical sand conditions are soft you should purchase the wedge with higher bounce (14 degree bounce). The added bounce will prevent the leading edge from digging in and stopping/slowing down the club. Conversely, if the sand conditions are generally hard packed, you should look at purchasing the wedge with less bounce.
If you are looking for a wedge to use from the fairway and the conditions are soft, you should purchase the higher bounce for the reasons above.
Note that if you have a steep angle into the ball, the wedge with less bounce will cause you to hit the occasional fat shot.
My suggestion is to purchase the wedge for the intended use and typical conditions you play in; this will result in the wedge being most versatile for you!
