Question:
I have learned that the best bunkers should be firm and shallow. Unfortunately at the course where I am a member they are soft and deep (more like a sandbox). Can you give me a suggestion as to how to hit out of these bunkers (as my wedges dig too deep and don't advance the ball very far)?
Answer:
If your sand wedge is digging in when you swing it means you are either not using the bounce properly, or need to have your wedge evaluated by your golf professional to ensure you are using the right equipment. Keep in mind there are many different types of sand wedges available. If the sand you typically play out of is soft and deep you should purchase a sandwedge with more bounce. This will prevent the leading edge from digging in as you contact the sand.
Try the following drill to feel the proper sensation for using the bounce: Place some sand on the face of your club. At your address position hold the clubface to the sky so that the sand stays on the face (you will feel your front wrist bend a little). Now, swing your arms through so that you throw the sand off the face of the club behind your body. This will give you the proper feeling for using the bounce through the ball.
After you hit a sand shot you should see the face of the club pointing to the sky. Also, bear in mind that you should swing fairly aggressively to keep the club accelerating through soft, deep sand.
Good luck!
