Question:
How do I learn to stay within my swing when I get to the golf course and not overswing?
Answer:
Thank you for your enquiry. There are many different ways to "stay within your swing", depending on what is causing you to overswing. Most people have a pre-conceived notion that if they see a touring professional or fellow golfer hitting a driver 300 yards or a 7 iron 170 yards they should be able to do this as well. Generally this is the cause of a mental breakdown on the golf course. My suggestion: Go to a driving range, make sure you are properly warmed up and choose your highest lofted club (sand wedge). Hit 20 full shots and notice where they land (not roll). You should be able to hit 90% of your shots within 8-10 yards of this total distance. Continue on through the rest of your clubs with this exercise. This will give you a clear understanding of how far your clubs travel in ideal conditions with no pressures or obstacles (water, sand, etc.) in front of you. When you go on the golf course try hitting one club more and gearing back your swing speed.
Next time you watch top level golfers, notice how well they control their distances; it's one major point that all top level players work on constantly and most amateurs overlook. If you know how far the ball is going you will have the confidence to get the ball over the water, past the sand or back to that tough pin! These obstacles usually put pressures on us which result in tension and, sometimes, disaster.
