Backswing Drills

Question:

I have been trying for two years to shorten my backswing but have been unable to do so with any regularity. I am very frustrated. Can you suggest any drills or swing thoughts that might help?

Answer:

To shorten your backswing it is very important to understand that there are three dimensions in your golf swing:
  1. Body - Must rotate to your back side to set, and then rotate to your front side to release
  2. Arms - They must hinge to set in your backswing, and un-hinge to release
  3. Hands - They must set in your backswing, and un-set to release

If you are not having success shortening your swing, an improper set of your hands and/or hinge of your arms will be the cause. Please take a picture of your takeaway (when the club is at waist high) and send it to me. I will then tell you what is not setting and what you need to do in order to fix this!
