Question:
I have a three part question. When I start my downswing, and let my hands drop, do I let them drop towards the ball or straight down? On the downswing, do I start to turn my body as soon as I start the swing? At what point do I uncock my wrists?
Answer:
Your question is one that is very specific to the individual and must be addressed as such. How you begin the downswing, and which part of your body initiates this, depends on where the clubface is in relation to your body at the pre-impact position. For example, if the club is unloading early, you need to feel the sensation of your lower body becoming more active and less hand/arm action from the top. You can determine if this is the problem by analyzing your ball flight and divots; if you have high ball flight, loss of distance and the tendency to not take divots, this is most likely the issue. Conversely, if your body is racing ahead leaving the club stuck behind, you need to feel the sensation of your arms/hands allowing the club to drop down on plane. If you have low ball flight, the tendency to hit a fade/slice and steep divots which are across the ball (out to in), this is most likely the cause.
I would strongly encourage you to check with your local PGA Teaching Professional and have your swing videotaped. As you review the video together, remember the details I have mentioned above at the pre-impact position. Once you can pinpoint the cause, you will then know what you need to feel with regard to starting your downswing.
