Question:
I hit my irons EXTREMELY high. I get no roll. My distance is adequate, but I wonder if a lower ball flight would help on approach shots and mishits. Is low better than high? Can I accomplish this with a shaft change?
Answer:
First of all you need to determine if you are hitting the ball with an open clubface and compensating by swinging across the ball (outside in). To evaluate this, look at your divot following an iron shot and see if it is pointing to the left (assuming you are a right handed golfer). If it does and the ball starts slightly left (the direction of this divot) and travels back at your intended target, this is the case. I suggest you visit a golf professional and have him/her teach you how to swing with a square clubface. Once your clubface is square, your ball should travel in the direction of the divot and the ball flight will be much lower. Once you begin to get comfortable with a square clubface, the next step is to learn how to swing the club on the correct path through the ball.
There are many golf shaft design factors which will help you hit the ball lower. However, if your clubface is open and your swing is traveling across the ball (outside in), the shaft will only mask the problem of high ball flight and provide a very limited solution to your challenge. Give this a try to begin with and let me know if you have any further questions.
