Question:
I have been told that having a driver re-shafted is a must because the stock shafts are just that much inferior to a quality brand name shaft. Is this the case or have those that have told me this been misinformed themselves?
Answer:
It really depends on what your swing speed is. It's not that custom shafts are necessarily better; it's that they are different! Generally, most custom shafts have less torque than their stock shaft counterparts. In the manufacturing of golf shafts, this "torque" is the most expensive aspect to control. As the club heads become larger, they place more stress on the tip end of the shaft. I believe lower torque shafts help all golfers, as it reduces the amount the club will twist through impact, which then results in fewer off-center hits and increased accuracy.
When I fit a client for clubs, one of my main goals is to get the player into the most flexible shaft as possible without compromising accuracy. This is typically done by giving players a softer shaft flex and reducing the torque. Typically, as stock shafts become more flexible the torque increases.
Please note - if your swing speed is less than 110 mph, and you do not generate the majority of your speed at the bottom (fast hands), you should not be using a shaft with under 2.8 degrees of torque! I strongly suggest you visit your local Golf Professional, as he/she will have the expertise to properly evaluate your ball flight, ensuring you get the proper shaft to match your swing.
