Are More Golf Clubs Better?

Question:

Why is it that I can shoot the same score by playing with only 3 or 4 clubs versus a whole set? (16 handicap)

Answer:

Playing your best golf has two components.
  1. Good technical mechanics: If the club is not traveling down in front of your body and releasing through the ball (square clubface) you will eliminate speed in your swing. This lack of speed and an open clubface will result in many of your clubs going similar distances. If this is occurring, there is no point in using all your clubs until you have eliminated the technical flaw.
  2. Mental game: The most important key to golf (as in life) is staying in the present. I refer to this as "trusting the process". Your performance will ultimately suffer and your chemistry will be negative if you live in the future, or the past, in this game. This being said, operating on your instinct (i.e. don't second guess yourself) will help you trust the process. Playing golf with 3 or 4 clubs will give you very limited options in the shots that you can hit. Therefore, you simply select the one you think (much more obvious with fewer clubs), accept the challenge in front of you (trust the process) and let it go! Again, staying in the present and having positive chemistry are the keys.

If you do have a bad shot playing with 3 or 4 clubs, it's much easier to let it go (release the negativity) and regain composure (accept the challenge ahead). This process keeps your chemistry positive, which ultimately helps improve your performance.
