Divots and Irons

Question:

I don't seem to take a divot when I am hitting with my irons - how can I rectify this?

Answer:

There a few reasons why golfers fail to take a divot. The most common reason I find is that the club is traveling down outside the desired plane on too steep of an angle. The compensation that players tend to make in an attempt to prevent the inevitable fat shot (big divot) is pulling the arms into the body. This causes the club head to travel up through the hitting area, resulting in hardly ever taking divots.

To help eliminate the tendency of the arms pulling into the body, please see the following picture for a through-swing checkpoint. Handle will be balanced between your arms, weight transferred to the front foot and clubface released.

I suggest you click on the following link to view a swing trainer that we regularly use at our academy. Utilizing a swing trainer on a regular basis will help you achieve the proper sensation. http://www.brentmorrisongolf.com/trainingaid.html
