Distance on Putts

Question:

I'm having distance control problems with my putts. What should I do?

Answer:

Use a ruler to inch it closer!

If you are having distance control problems on your putts, try this ruler drill to improve your putts and lagging spirits. Last week, Dick Noulis had a tough time on the greens. His distance control was, at best, suspect. Suffering through a seemingly endless string of three-putts, Dick came to me in despair.

If you, too, are having distance control problems on your putts, try this ruler drill to improve your putts and lagging spirits.

  1. Assume your address position and place a ruler in between your front hand and the putter.

  2. Begin your putting stroke, stopping at the back. The ruler should remain the same distance away from your front wrist as it was in your starting position.

  3. Stop again in your finish position and ensure you have maintained the correct position of the ruler.

  4. Too often, golfers make the mistake of cupping the left wrist, which results in a "popping" action of the putter. This drill will help you maintain a consistent putting speed; maintaining a constant position of the ruler will help you avoid cupping your wrist.
