How to Deal with Sandtraps

By Brent Morrison with Janie Rome Morrison

Most golfers have a difficult time understanding commentators during professional golf events when they state: "What a good break he/she got by the ball finishing in the sand". There are many different aspects to becoming "tour confident" out of the sand.

One basic element that all golfers should work on is using the bounce of the golf club. The following drill will begin to give you a basic feel for properly utilizing the bounce of the club in the sand. Scoop some sand onto the face of your club and, with the same motion in which you swing, toss the sand off your clubhead so that it goes behind your body (first two pictures below). The bottom two pictures are of me actually hitting a shot. Notice how closely the clubface positions match to the tossing drill.

Properly using the bounce while accelerating into your finish position will prevent the club from digging in the sand and ultimately result in you becoming one step closer to becoming a tour-confident sand player!
